I want to let you know that today I will be taking the day off to remember a close friend lost 6 months ago. The thought for the day that I wish to leave you with is complex. It begins with a simple message, one this friend lived by:
Be the change you wish to see in the world – Mahatma Gandhi (1869 – 1948)
This is something that can be related to any aspect of life. My good friend related this to sustainability. Having said that, I would like to challenge all of you to go out of your way today to do one thing to make a difference. This means recycling something instead of trashing it, reusing something instead of washing it, conserving water, upcycling something, donating something, or helping others. Selflessness makes the world go ’round, and it’s quite obvious the ancillary benefits of acting in this manner create positive spin. For example, Toms donates a pair of shoes for every pair they sell, as does Warby Parker. Goodwill offers used clothes to those who cannot afford retail prices. A personal favorite of this close friend, Patagonia is part of the 1% for the planet group that donates this portion of proceeds from every purpose to a cause, a company that has a leader who loves breaking dams, recycling their own clothes to make into re-tooled items, and creates products linked to eco-friendly and conservation organizations.
Today I challenge you to, even if just once, be the change you wish to see in the world.
